Review Comments
Choiceworks is a unique app which provides three essential strategies: a visual schedule, a waiting board and a feeling board (a small emotional toolbox).

Contents
  • The image library contains 165 clear, simple images with voice. You can easily create a duplicate of these images and record your own voice on to the image. You can also add your own images, with text and voice.
  •  Choiceworks has a simple, uncluttered appearance which students find easy to use.
  • This app involves the child in their transition through their schedule. The child moves the activity to the right into the 'all done' column. Then they hear "all done".
  • A great feature is the narration of the schedule. Simply tap on the play button and the narrator will read the steps in the schedule.

The waiting board shows the child a picture of what they are doing while they are waiting. It includes a timer so the child can see how long they need to wait. It also gives the child a choice of an activity to do while they are waiting.  For example, "I am having a quiet time for 3 minutes. While I am waiting I can read or listen to my music". Multiple waiting boards can be saved.

The picture schedule has the look of a paper based schedule where the child moves the completed task picture to the right and the child hears "All done". A timer can be added to each step in the schedule. Multiple schedules can be saved.

The feelings board helps the child label the emotion then choose tools to fix the emotion. For example, "When I am cranky, I can get a drink or stomp my feet. Then I can read a book or do a puzzle".  Multiple feeling boards can be saved.

Choiceworks also includes a Companion Story Book to reinforce each strategy. The Companion books appear to follow the criteria for a Social Story, another added bonus for this app.

Learning App
Learning apps are designed for a specific purpose. The authors claim to teach a goal, skill or concept.
Bloom's Thinking Process
Bloom's Taxonomy is classification system used to explain the behaviours important in learning. Apps range from simple memory tasks such as flashcards apps through to creative apps which ask students to create an original story or video.
Bloom's Creating
The student creates new ideas, products or ways of viewing things. Activities include making, animating, designing, constructing, planning, producing and inventing.
Bloom's Evaluating
The student justifies a decision or course of action. Activities include counting to check, hypothesising, critiquing, experimenting and judging.
Bloom's Analysing
The student breaks the information into parts to explore understandings and relationships. Activities include explaining, ordering, inferring, comparing and organising.
Bloom's Applying
The student uses the information in a new situation. Activities include implementing, carrying out, using, illustrating, classifying and categorising.
Bloom's Understanding
The student comprehends the new information. Activities include describing, predicting showing understanding use a multiple choice.
Bloom's Remembering
The student recalls information they know. Activities include matching, 'fill in the blank', making a choice, answering using a multiple choice, naming a group.
Learning Connection
How well does the app teach the targeted skill or concept? This is the area where we refer to current research and pedagogy to evaluate the efficacy of the app.
Authenticity
Authenticity looks at the manner in which skills are learnt. Authentic apps use real life or genuine activities. Students learn in context rather than in a contrived or rote fashion (such as flashcards).
Feedback
Feedback needs to be specific and result in improved performance. Feedback should be supportive and encouraging rather than negative. Data should be available to support decision making.
Differentiation
Differentiation is the ability to customise the app to suit the student. The ability to record you voice, customise text, add pictures and alter settings enables individualisation of the app.
User Friendliness
User friendliness is a measure of how well a student can use the app independently. Some apps are simply intuitive to use. Others include audio or visual prompts which support the student.
Motivation
All apps are engaging the first time they are played. However, students with diverse learning needs may need to return to the app many times. Motivating apps offer rewards, games or incentives.
Schedules and Work Systems
Picture schedules use pictures to show a list of activities in a time sequence. Works systems are minischedules which give a list of steps within an activity. These systems usually include a way for the student to check off when they have completed an activity (this is called task completion) and a way to show the student that the schedule or activity has finished.
Self Management
Self-management or self monitoring is a behavioural strategy where the child self-monitors and self-reinforces their own behaviours. Children can manage their own social skills, emotions or behaviours. Also see Reward, Counters and Rating Scale apps.

Learning Connection 4
This app features three evidence based visual support strategies. The schedule, waiting board and feelings board are well designed. The addition of a Social Story which is well constructed and visual in an added bonus. I would like to see a way of communicating that a step in the schedule has changed or is now not available.
Authenticity 2
The child moves their picture of image across to the "All Done" column when they have completed a task to show they know that the task is finished. The feelings board directs the student towards a strategy. The timer could be used to help a child evaluate and check how long they need to wait.
Feedback 3
This app involves the child in the schedule. The child moves the activity to the right into the 'all done' column. Timers are used to show the student the length of an activity or the time they need to wait.
Differentiation 3
You can add your own photos and voice to this app. You could record your own voice on to the images in the library. It would be useful to be able to change some of the wording in the Companion Books.
User Friendliness 3
The home page opens to a written text list of the features of the app. Non readers would need help finding their schedule or boards. The app has a clean, crisp appearance. I found children could use this app independently. Similarly, adults could set up the schedules and boards without needing to look at the help section. Saying that, the user guides are fantastic.
Motivation 3
This app is engaging but could use a reward option for completion of the schedule or waiting board.

Schedule Board
The Schedule Board makes task completion easier and more fun! The schedule is paired with an ‘all done’ column to check off steps toward a motivating reward. Timers can be added to any task or activity. The schedules are easy to edit and fully customizable. Once you have created a schedule, it will be saved automatically.

Waiting Board
The Waiting Board teaches waiting skills like taking turns and not interrupting. The user can begin by reading the companion book, When Do I Have to Wait? Using the waiting board, the top picture indicates the reason why the child is waiting and a timer can be set to show how long the child will wait. The child can then choose an activity to do while waiting.

Feelings Board
The Feelings Board provides a tool for helping children understand and express emotions. The user can begin by reading the companion book, When I Get Upset, to provide an example of how the child might recognize an emotion and choose a coping strategy. On the Feelings Board, the user can then help the child indicate how they are feeling from a range of options, select a coping strategy, and then request an activity to help them feel better or re-engage with others.

Feelings Scale
Helps users identify, manage and cope with feelings across environments throughout the day. By tracking their feelings on the board, users can analyze the data for trends to learn if tasks done at different times of day or in different environments affect outcome. Environments and schedules can then be altered to achieve better results.
