Toontastic Jr. Pirates - for iPad is an amazing app which gives children the opportunity to create a story using fun pirate characters. The app opens to pirates dancing and a terrific pirate adventure. This is the Junior version to the Toontastic app.

Toontastic guides the child through the steps in creating a story. The child sees three spinning wheels showing pirate scenes. They need to choose a beginning, middle and ending scene. I just wish they could spin a little slower.

The child watches the animation with the first scene they chose. Then it is their turn. They can animate the characters in the scenes and record their voice.

One of the features I particularly like is the addition of emotion to the scene. The child chooses an emotion which matches the mood of the scene. Each written emotion shows a pirates face. They can listen to the music which matches the emotion. The emotions are scared, happy, jolly, angry, sad, brave, shh (no music). Students on the spectrum often see a book as a collection of facts. Toontastic asks them to look at the emotion behind the facts.

The child animates, records their voice and adds the music to each scene to create their story. I particularly like the credits at the end.

Toontastic is ideal for children who want to learn how to make a story without the added stress of text. Toontastic includes a very detailed parent guide. Children can also share the stories and view other stories at the developer's website.

There is another app Toontastic: All Areas for older students which introduces children to the story arc.

Learning App
Learning apps are designed for a specific purpose. The authors claim to teach a goal, skill or concept.
Bloom's Thinking Process
Bloom's Taxonomy is classification system used to explain the behaviours important in learning. Apps range from simple memory tasks such as flashcards apps through to creative apps which ask students to create an original story or video.
Bloom's Creating
The student creates new ideas, products or ways of viewing things. Activities include making, animating, designing, constructing, planning, producing and inventing.
Bloom's Evaluating
The student justifies a decision or course of action. Activities include counting to check, hypothesising, critiquing, experimenting and judging.
Bloom's Analysing
The student breaks the information into parts to explore understandings and relationships. Activities include explaining, ordering, inferring, comparing and organising.
Bloom's Applying
The student uses the information in a new situation. Activities include implementing, carrying out, using, illustrating, classifying and categorising.
Bloom's Understanding
The student comprehends the new information. Activities include describing, predicting showing understanding use a multiple choice.
Bloom's Remembering
The student recalls information they know. Activities include matching, 'fill in the blank', making a choice, answering using a multiple choice, naming a group.
Learning Connection
How well does the app teach the targeted skill or concept? This is the area where we refer to current research and pedagogy to evaluate the efficacy of the app.
Authenticity
Authenticity looks at the manner in which skills are learnt. Authentic apps use real life or genuine activities. Students learn in context rather than in a contrived or rote fashion (such as flashcards).
Feedback
Feedback needs to be specific and result in improved performance. Feedback should be supportive and encouraging rather than negative. Data should be available to support decision making.
Differentiation
Differentiation is the ability to customise the app to suit the student. The ability to record you voice, customise text, add pictures and alter settings enables individualisation of the app.
User Friendliness
User friendliness is a measure of how well a student can use the app independently. Some apps are simply intuitive to use. Others include audio or visual prompts which support the student.
Motivation
All apps are engaging the first time they are played. However, students with diverse learning needs may need to return to the app many times. Motivating apps offer rewards, games or incentives.
Narrative & Story Telling
Emotional Vocabulary
Emotional Vocabulary apps help children to label an emotion, to identify emotions in others or to identify their own emotion. Emotions should be related to what can be seen e.g. a smile means happy. It is also useful to link the emotion to an activity e.g. being last makes me cranky.
Story Makers with Characters
These apps come with characters and scenes to bring stories to life. Many allow you to make an animated story or cartoon with voice. These are great for story telling, oral narrative and interviews. I also enjoy using the to practise social and conversational skills. Try recording your social script or social stories too. Also see Story and Book Maker apps.

Domain Score Details
Learning Connection 4
Toontastic Jr. Pirates teaches story structure with emphasis on the emotion of the story. This is an easy to use app which will encourage children to create stories without the need for text. This app is useful for oral narrative and sequencing too. I have starting using this app to work on emotional vocabulary too.
Authenticity 4
This is creative learning at it's best. The child is the director and sets the scene and directs the characters to create their own animated book.
Feedback 1
Feedback is not usually included in storybook apps.
Differentiation 4
The child chooses the scene and animates and records their story. The child also adds emotional music to the story.
User Friendliness 3
There is a pleasant voice which guides the child through the steps. I just wish the scene selection process was a little slower.
Motivation 4
This is one of the favourite apps for children of all ages. I actually use it as a reward app too. This app is one of those ideal apps where children don't even realise they are learning while they are having fun.
