Auditory Workout uses a basketball theme to give children plenty of practise following directions. These directions can be heard in quiet or in background noise. This is a language comprehension task. With the background noise on, it could also be used for speech in noise desensitisation training.

The child sees five images. They hear a verbal instruction. The pictures are faded until the instruction is completed. This stops the student from choosing an answer before the direction is completed. Then they need to choose the image by tapping on the picture. I wish the box surrounding the image remained as some of the busier images have little space between them. This can be visually confusing for some students.

The background noise can be turned on or off and adjusted from loud to soft. I wish there were some levels (such as loudness level one to five) so that the adult could gradually increase the background noise.

There are a large number of language directions from which to choose with up to 18 levels of difficulty. The app includes:

  •  Basic Directions. These are one level commands with increasing numbers of adjectives and prepositions.
  •  Quantitative and spatial directions i.e. directions with and/or, both/all, size, colour,1st, 2nd, 3rd, last.
  •  Temporal (time) directions i.e. directions with before, after
  •  Conditional directions i.e. directions which include if - then statements

The app can provide an alternate count so that two students can take turns following the directions.

Learning App
Learning apps are designed for a specific purpose. The authors claim to teach a goal, skill or concept.
Bloom's Thinking Process
Bloom's Taxonomy is classification system used to explain the behaviours important in learning. Apps range from simple memory tasks such as flashcards apps through to creative apps which ask students to create an original story or video.
Bloom's Creating
The student creates new ideas, products or ways of viewing things. Activities include making, animating, designing, constructing, planning, producing and inventing.
Bloom's Evaluating
The student justifies a decision or course of action. Activities include counting to check, hypothesising, critiquing, experimenting and judging.
Bloom's Analysing
The student breaks the information into parts to explore understandings and relationships. Activities include explaining, ordering, inferring, comparing and organising.
Bloom's Applying
The student uses the information in a new situation. Activities include implementing, carrying out, using, illustrating, classifying and categorising.
Bloom's Understanding
The student comprehends the new information. Activities include describing, predicting showing understanding use a multiple choice.
Bloom's Remembering
The student recalls information they know. Activities include matching, 'fill in the blank', making a choice, answering using a multiple choice, naming a group.
Learning Connection
How well does the app teach the targeted skill or concept? This is the area where we refer to current research and pedagogy to evaluate the efficacy of the app.
Authenticity
Authenticity looks at the manner in which skills are learnt. Authentic apps use real life or genuine activities. Students learn in context rather than in a contrived or rote fashion (such as flashcards).
Feedback
Feedback needs to be specific and result in improved performance. Feedback should be supportive and encouraging rather than negative. Data should be available to support decision making.
Differentiation
Differentiation is the ability to customise the app to suit the student. The ability to record you voice, customise text, add pictures and alter settings enables individualisation of the app.
User Friendliness
User friendliness is a measure of how well a student can use the app independently. Some apps are simply intuitive to use. Others include audio or visual prompts which support the student.
Motivation
All apps are engaging the first time they are played. However, students with diverse learning needs may need to return to the app many times. Motivating apps offer rewards, games or incentives.
Language Comprehension
Language comprehension is the ability to understand and then apply the language you have heard. Also see apps for Questions and Reading Comprehension.

Domain Score Details
Learning Connection 4
This app offers plenty of practise at following directions. I like the hierarchy of sentences so the student can stay with this app for quite some time. I also like the added ability to work on speech in noise as this is a common goal for students on the spectrum.
Authenticity 2
The student follows the direction by choosing the correct image from a choice of five.
Feedback 2
When the student is correct, they hear a positive ping sound and they earn a basketball. When incorrect, they hear a neutral sound. (You can choose to turn off these sounds). This app provides a detailed report which can be emailed.
Differentiation 3
Pages can turn automatically or by swiping through. You can chooose to select all sentences or deselect all sentences. You can also set the award counter to adjust to the number of turns required before the student can play the award game. Automatic scoring and page turning can be turned off.
User Friendliness 3
I wish the box remained around each image. The images can run into each other when all are shown.
Motivation 3
The student earns basket balls for correct answers. They can earn a basket ball game or a catch game when they get enough balls. They have to see how many basket balls they can sink in a basket or catch using a bucket in 5 seconds.

****I absolutely love this app. It works for so many of my auditory comprehension and auditory processing students! This app has the ability to add background noise with a sliding volume lever! My students enjoy the basketball reward offered at short intervals which is very motivating. (Jasmine S. SLP)****
